Avanti Therapeutics is commercializing a portfolio of
protein-based products – recombinant proteins and peptides – for
the prevention and treatment of hospital acquired – infections.
The company has focused its initial efforts on developing
products for the prevention and treatment of staphylococcal
infections.

The cost of infections from antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the
United States is in excess of $4 billion annually. With the rise
in antibiotic resistance and increased infection rates, a great
burden has been placed on the care of the immuno-compromised,
such as premature newborns, cancer patients, transplant
patients, and diabetics. Due to the rise in antibiotic
resistance, current treatments and products are becoming less
effective against, and creating more resistant strains of,
hospital infections.
AT-GC has developed a portfolio of products for
commercialization for the prevention and treatment of multi-drug
resistant staphylococcal infections. AT-GC currently has two
products in pre-clinical development-Staphcin and ATGC-S409.
Staphcin has demonstrated the efficacy in eradicating
Methicillin resistant S.
aureus as well as Methicillin-susceptible
S. aureus biofilms
on artificial surfaces. Staphcin is one of the very few
anti-infective product that is able to both rapidly kill
staphylococci (Staph) and eliminate staph biofilms.
All the products have undergone extensive pre-clinical research
with excellent results. We expect the products to be in clinical
trials by 2nd quarter of 2006.

Applications
StaphcinTM
Sraphcin, an
endopeptidase specific for the cell wall peptidoglycan of
staphylococci, is an extremely potent anti-staphylococcal agent.
Staphcin is
used as a research and diagnostic tool. Because it lyses
staphylococci efficiently, it is widely used when preparing
staphylococcal DNA or other cellular components for genetic and
biochemical studies and for the preparation of protoplasts for
transformation. Preparation and analysis of bacterial DNA has
become a powerful tool used by clinical and other
microbiologists in epidemiological studies aimed at tracing
sources of infection or bacterial contamination.
AT-GC has
been producing Staphcin of greater than 90% purity under the
trade name AMBICIN® L since 1991. Staphcin is a highly purified
recombinant protein, and is an essential tool for studying the
epidemiology and molecular genetics of staphylococci. Staphcin
is the most cost-effective endopeptidase available for
staphylococcal infection studies.
